As a professional photographer on one side and a researcher on the other, I argue that a photographer always acts from a place of knowing, while the researcher is driven by not knowing yet. These two seemingly opposed forces and the dichotomy they establish will be elaborated further during the workshop Those in the know – facing the unknown.
There is a sort of confidence that every photographer needs to perform with, either in the area of technical knowledge, social skills, or the ideas and messages they want to communicate, which often lean on the hierarchy and relations of power between the photographer, the photographed, and the spectators. On the contrary, to admit ‘not knowing’ as a driving force is a place of vulnerability.
What is a place of vulnerability that photographers share? How do different photographic practices deal with the area of the unknown? What are the capacities of photography as a research tool?
These and similar questions will serve as a base of a discussion-based workshop led by Katarina Šoškić.
Katarina Šoškić
is a photographer and artist-researcher interested in the capacities of the photographic image to question social phenomena, as well the codependency of textual and visual narratives. Within the imaginary format of an audio-photo book, she tests the limitation of the medium and its usual setup of photo exhibitions and photo books. Her work is often site-specific and process-oriented, with performative elements of walks and live readings. What she finds most exciting in her work is the choice of taking certain positions, the possibility of switching points of view, and questioning the diversity of possible truths. She is a candidate for a PhD in Artistic Research at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, with an ongoing investigation into mass tourism and traveling. Parallel to this, she works as a photographer commissioned in portrait, fashion, and travel photography. She is based between Vienna and Belgrade.
