Teo Ala-Ruona

Teo Ala-Ruona is a performance artist based in Helsinki. In his work, he explores the possibilities of somatic fiction to influence our perceptions of the human body, its technological essence, and psycho-physical extremes. His works investigate the intertwining of linguistic, semiotic, technological, and biological existence, exploring techno-trans-masculinity, sexuality, and eco-normative narratives of “naturalness.” He examines these by interweaving autobiographical and theoretical texts, scientific research, fiction, and bodily exercises.
Ala-Ruona’s artistic dedication lies in harnessing the transgressive and fictitious potential of performance art to expand our understanding of humanity. He does this by pushing the boundaries of our comprehension of bodily limits and challenging the conventions of normalcy. He finds joy in the weird and the risky on stage.
Ala-Ruona’s work has recently been shown e.g. in Performa Biennial (New York), The Vilnius Biennial of Performance Art (Vilnius), The Finnish National Gallery Kiasma (Helsinki), The Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (London), The Place (London), Sequences festival (Reykjavik), Centrale Fies (Dro) and Toaster/Husets Teater (Copenhagen).
