Open call for photographers to participate on a REFEST project

REFEST Images & Words on Refuge Routes

Open call for photographers from Croatia to participate in an Artist-in-residence program during the REFEST Images & Words on Refuge Routes project

Photographers with residency in Croatia are invited to submit their proposals to participate in the project REFEST Images & Words on Refugee Routes. REFEST is a Creative Europe co-funded project that follows the refugees and immigrants’ routes with the aim of addressing public perception on refugees and migrants on public opinion through the artistic representation of the material collected and elaborated during the itinerant programme.

REFEST brings together 4 organizations from 4 different countries involved in small and medium size festivals that have become spaces for creativity and social debate: Urban and the Balkan Photo Festival in Sarajevo, Organ Vida and the International Photography Festival in Zagreb, Passaggi Festival in Fano and Fundación Montemadrid through Casa San Cristobal in Festivalito de Autoedición de Villaverde (FAV).

The REFEST programme committee will select eight artists through a Call for Artists at national level in each of the 4 countries involved (Italy, Spain, BiH, and Croatia). The altogether 32 selected artists will then form 4 multidisciplinary transnational working groups in each country (8 artists per group). Each group will investigate a topic of their choice (e.g. refugees in movement, perception of locals, condition of woman, identities and loss, fears and hopes etc.) but linked to the main theme (refugees) and to the location of the 4 residencies. Their final works will then be exhibited during the 4 festivals participating in REFEST (Organ Vida International Photography Festival Zagreb, Balkan Photo Festival Sarajevo, Passaggi Festival of Fano, Festivalito de Villaverde Madrid).

The REFEST project consist of Artists-in-Residence program and final exhibitions in four European festivals that are communicating through the medium of photography, illustration, and poetry:

  1. First artist residence will be in Sarajevo on 4-8 December 2017 (dates to be defined), 2 working days where all 32 artists will participate (8 Croatian photographers, 8 BIH photographers, 8 Italian poets and 8 Spainish illustrators)
  2. 4 Itinerant Artists-in-Residence with curatorial mentorships will take place as following:
  • January 2018: Sarajevo
  • February 2018: Spain, Italy, Zagreb

The works produced by artists will be exhibited during Festivals:

  • April 2018: Madrid
  • June 2018: Fano
  • September 2018: Zagreb
